cPhD Research:

Kelly Heideman (Honours student in the Department of Psychology at Monash Univeristy), in conjunction with Professor Paul Martin who is head of the "Conquer Headaches" program at Southern Health, is conducting a research project on whether avoiding the triggers of headaches is

the most appropriate advice for preventing headaches.

Kelly is seeking people over the age of 18 who suffer from headaches at least once a week on average, to fill out a few short online questionnaires (weblink is: http://spppm-cf.med.monash.edu.au/surveys2010/kellyh/ ) in

relation to headaches, which will take 10-20 minutes and is anonymous.

Ethics approval for this project, 'Development of a questionnaire for assessing the history of headache triggers avoidance' has been granted. (Ethics approval number: CF10/1324-2010000704).

Diagnosis is difficult and cannot be made from the symptoms of headache and migraine alone because the symptoms of many different types of headache overlap. However the challenge of determining if disorders of the upper neck are involved has largely been overcome. Application of techniques I have developed form the basis of courses I present for physiotherapists and other interested healthcare professionals in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland and Germany. This approach in Europe and the United Kingdom has become known as the 'Watson Headache Approach'. Practitioners of headacheandmigraine.com have completed not only the basic two-day course but after at least six months of experience using the techniques also a one-day advanced course.
